2020 Racing Into The Night

It’s easy to write 2020 off as a year where nothing happened except pain and suffering. And indeed, this post isn’t to flaunt whatever joy I experienced or to woe-is-me the tragedies. But having to sit down and really contemplate the opportunities I’ve been given, …

Namino, Shibuya

Kaisendon or seafood bowls are hands down one of my top 3 favourite Japanese dishes of all time. I mean, what is there not to like? It’s rice topped with generous portions of fish, crab, crab roe, shellfish and even sea urchin if you’re lucky, …

Freeman Shokudo, Hatagaya

The year of the lockdown hasn’t been all that conducive for dining out and subsequently, the writing of said dining out. But there are still a few great eateries I need to expound on before we banish all memory of 2020 to a box, locked …

Coming Back

I stepped back into the ring on the third Friday of September 2020, ending a 6 month hiatus from Muay Thai. During this time I had tried my best to stay fit in my own way, with a consistent home training regime. Not great but …

Chicken Feathers

Author’s Note: This was my prose submission to the 2020 George Town Literary Festival under the theme of ‘life under lockdown in the time of COVID-19’. Unfortunately it didn’t win but I’m pretty proud of it and so decided to share it here on my …

Sushi no Midori, Akasaka

The living in Japan equivalent of making lemonade out of lemons is to treat yourself to sushi. No matter how bad a day or a week you’ve had, plonk a bowl of chirashi or a nigiri selection in front of you and you’ll find your …

Chichibu and Nagatoro, Japan

The number of covid-19 cases in Tokyo is on the rise again, but several weeks ago when we enjoyed a moment’s optimism, we made a break for Saitama prefecture. We were able to avoid prolonged hours on public transport by renting a car, no doubt …

Yakitori Toriyama, Roppongi

We’ve been really fortunate here in Japan so far with dwindling covid-19 cases in comparison to a lot of countries around the world. It’s reflected not just in the relaxing of all state of emergency requests, but the people of Tokyo have definitely started to …

Why I Feel Complicit in the Death of Hana Kimura

Hana Kimura passed away this weekend. She was 22 years old, with bright pink hair and quirky, glamorous costumes that she wore as part of her thriving career as a female professional wrestler. Some of us might have come to know of Hana through her …

Muay Thai in The Time of a Pandemic

While I may have lost count over how many days its been since I last stepped into a Muay Thai gym, what is irrefutable is that this is the longest I’ve gone without guided training since I began practicing in 2017. These periods of social …

@inuajp was one of the first dining experiences I had when I finally moved to Tokyo and I’m really sad to see that they are officially closing down. We forget the taste of the dishes, the aroma of wine and the ambience of a restaurant filled with people but we never forget how a memorable dining experience made us feel. All the very best and take care to the Inua team 👌🏻
