The Dance of the Lion

Last Friday I was at Midvalley Megamall in my hometown of Petaling Jaya, on the verge of the world’s worst migraine. The rush of finishing up work in Tokyo before an extended holiday, having almost zero sleep on the flight back to Malaysia and general …

Bref by Darren Chin, Malaysia

Malaysia’s best food can traditionally be found at our hawker centres and in the form of street food but the tide is most certainly turning with the rise in modern dining. I’ve written about Dewakan in the past, a hero – by way of being …

Gamagōri, Japan

Adventures in Aichi-ken continue as we head further south to Gamagōri, a place I had truly never heard of until Emi added it to our itinerary due to our penchant for onsen. A population of just 80,000 or so, the largest onsen resort town in …

Nagoya, Japan

The road to the end of 2019, to the start of 2020 and to Aichi Prefecture began with our first stop in the city of Nagoya. Nagoya is famous for not having very many things to do at all, or so said my cheeky colleagues when …

2019 The Name of Life

The sound of 2019 is the voice of one of my Thai trainers as he shrieks “我慢!” at me from within the ring. He does this in a way that is both serious and jovial, and often when I complain about the pain of being …

Hokkaido, Japan

A child of summer can count the number of times she’s seen snow, no matter how many seasons of winter she has endured. Each moment is ephemeral, a love or fear at first sight, before it fades unrecognizably into the background like a normal day …

One Year in Tokyo

Several years ago, I read David Chang’s Unified Theory of Deliciousness in Wired, which gave me a new perspective on the duality of life. You can read his in-depth observations on the topic above but the summary of it is that a dish that is …

Where to stay in Tokyo?

If I had 100 yen for every time someone asks me where they should stay in Tokyo for their upcoming holiday, I would have enough money to stop working and blog full-time. Seeing as this is not the case, I’m writing this blog for free …

Yakiniku Daichi, Roppongi

It always surprises people when I tell them I have no yakiniku recommendations for Tokyo, or Japan in general, because I’ve hardly ever had yakiniku in my life. Case in point, it’s been seven months since I moved to Tokyo and I’ve only had it …

Goop has arrived in Tokyo! It’s the brand’s first foray into Asia. The main section is the lifestyle store where the brand stocks everything from rose quartz face rollers to athleisure to charcoal bath soaks. Whatever your take is on Gwyneth Paltrow’s controversial brand, you …

Yesterday’s hike up 子ノ権現 in Chichibu was a beautiful release from being a huge homebody for most of 2021 so far. An extended state of emergency coupled with a chronic gut-related illness has kept me a bit blue but am trying my best to see the silver lining of each day 🌤
Looking for Rare Candy 🍬⚡️
I just want more people to enjoy Tohoku 🥺 New blog post on eating, touring and more eating in Sendai, link in profile
Happy Chinese New Year from another throwback photo of my past self (and cameo of my cousin, Marcus) because once again I was not able to make it back home to celebrate 🧧🙃 . I know this might be the first lonely Chinese New Year for some people and I just want to say, I hear you! It sucks. Maybe you don’t even have access to Chinese food, arguably the best part of the holiday besides receiving money, playing cards and annoying your family. My biggest tip is honestly just calling family and friends. Video calling is even better. It’s amazing how much less alone you’ll feel, I promise.
@enekotokyo was so amazing, I really want to have my wedding there one day 🥺 In the meantime, my birthday long lunch blog post is up, link in profile 💕
One of my first cosplays almost 10 years ago was Nana Osaki from ナナ, made with nothing but Post-It cigarettes and stuff from our own closets 😂 Swipe to see the inspiration photos. It’s funny that I have my own lotus tattoo now too, in a different place and for a different reason though.
